Hybrid systems (zakaria: political rights and civil liberties are theoretically distinct, constitutional liberalism refers to a government"s goals. Protect an individual"s autonomy and dignity against coercion. Basically its a question about governmental authority: today, western governments embody both democracy and constitutional liberalism but many don"t. Military strength (reward for joining military- not death) and public disapproval (no uprisings because of fear) weakness. We know everything (phones tapped, internet blocked) Public torture (hangings, stoning), everything televised (one television channel), hunger games, no prisons- death, no courts, military checkpoints, state-controlled education, no religion or worship dictator (or death), wall around country, child soldiers. Not all countries go from authoritarianism to democracy: regime change is not a one way street. Tuesday, february 7, 2017: some authoritarians regimes persist for a very long time, some countries experience a democratic breakdown, one more thing here.
