Jembe - can be identified by an open bottom and it’s goblet shape. Either play tilted
away from you so your hands are not flexed inwards or sit on it.
Asiko - can be identified by an open bottom and it’s cone shape. Either play tilted away
from you so your hands are not flexed inwards or sit on it.
Junjung - have two drum heads. It is a bass drum. There are three kinds of Junjungs
(differ in sizes) from smallest to largest are Kinkini, Sangban and Junjung. The different
sizes produce different pitches. Can be played with mallets. Same drums are called
surdos in Brazil. One ensemble can have as many as 50 surdos.
Conga - one drum head and has a barrel shape. Three types of Congas are Quinto
(small), Conga (medium) and Tumbadora (large).
Plus, we also have heard professor play the cowbell in class various times!
The drum is hit on the edge of the drum head. Be careful to not hurt your thumbs
(thumbs up). Try not to have tension in other fingers
Go - right hand
Do - left hand
Drum is hit in the center of the drum head with flat hand.
Goon - right hand bass
Doon - left hand bass
End call - “red light”: you need to stop. It has an additional note at the end.
