Domesticated and feral pigeons originated from the blue barred rock dove. Introduced to n. america in 1606 at port royal nova scotia. Spread from urban areas but not beyond southern ca. Populations have spread across the us and canada. Sexually dimorphic for many species, with the male slightly larger in size than a female. Unique method of drinking compared to all other birds. 2 white eggs, except some fruit doves and tropical doves that lay 1 egg. Small eggs relative to body size along with small clutch size means that pigeons have the smallest total clutch weight in relation to adult weight of all birds. But, have multiple clutches up to 8 per year. Very rapid fledging rate due to the production of crop milk. All pigeons/doves produce crop milk as do flamingos and emperor penguins. The physical appearance of this material is white in color and resembles cottage cheese.
