Congenital vs Hereditary
• Congenital
o Birth defect
o Born with an abnormality
o Not all congenital disease is hereditary
o Some congenital disease is due to genetics, infections, toxins, random
mutations, etc.
▪ Some are idiopathic
• Hereditary
o Genetics- get from parents
o Not all hereditary disease is congenital (born with)
• Different/same
o You can have hereditary disease that can manifest later
Abortion
Spontaneous vs induced
• Abortion is the same as a miscarriage
o Spontaneous (genetics, infection, mutation, idiopathic)
o In vet med, we are talking about spontaneous abortion
• Abortion in humans is usually medically induced abortion
Asclepius
Asclepius- half god half human; god of healing
Hermes or Mercury- God of traveling
• Caduceus- staff of Hermes or rod of Asclepius??
o Often mistaken as the symbol of healing.
o Two serpents around staff with wings

Cat names: male- tom, female- queen, young- kitten, parturition- queening.
