Document Summary

Enzymes are used to accelerate reactions in cells. Lecture 2- 1/19/2017: like in metabolism produce energy, enzymatic reactions are connected, increase efficienty and specificity, often enzymatic reactions occur at a specific location. Ex: membrane: reduce activation energy of a reaction, therefore making it happen in less time and with greater efficiency, can not change the equilibrium point. Metabolism: use food energy: catabolism= break down molecules, release energy, anabolism= make molecules, use energy. Organisms must follow the 2nd law of thermodynamics: entropy always tends to increase, or it can remain the same, entropy does not decrease. If it does, the reaction is not spontaneous. 1st law of thermodynamics: energy can be converted from one form to another: can not be destroyed. Heat= most disordered form of energy: produced by creating order locally. Energy contained by a molecule that could potentially be used for work. The less free energy a molecule has, the less reactive a molecule is.
