INDE 2333 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Statistical Inference, Qualitative Property, Random Variable
Document Summary
Use a sample to make statistical inference for the population. Collect data to: make decisions, solve problems, design products and processes. Statistical techniques are: use to describe variability. Variability observations of a system that does not produce the same result: use to identify the potential source of variability. Statistics uses data to draw conclusion about something unknown. Dot diagram plot for displaying a small body of data: approximately of 20 observations, this plot shows the location/middle and scatter/variability, useful for comparing sets of data. Observational study observe individuals and measures variables of interest but does not attempt to influence the responses. Experimental study deliberately imposes some treatment on individuals in order to observe their responses. Quantitative data represent amount on a numerical scale. Qualitative data no interpretation; can only be classified. Allow designers to determine simultaneously the individual and interactive effects of many factors. Help determine sensitive areas in designs that cause problems in output.
