ENGL 3315 Lecture 1: 1-17-2017 Intro Lecture on The Romantic Movement
Document Summary
Wordsworth argues that literary tricks are too damn much. Wordsworth"s 3 principles: poetry must concern itself primarily with nature and life in the country, lyrical ballads emphasize the status of poetry as a form of art. He intends to enlighten his readers to the true depths of human emotion and experience: poetry doestn have to be overly complicated or ornamental in order to capture the reader"s imagination. Clean, simple lines are best in his opinion. Why is it romantic literature: it is in some way trying to imitate medieval poetry, lirerary romances in particular, literary romance was stories of chivalry and adventures, romantic literature as a medieval revival . Wordsworth, coleridge and southey were in this school and they wrote nature poetry. Shelley"s heros in his poetry are counter-culture outlaws. John keates was in the cockney school of poetry: cockney as pejorative dialect of the lower class. These romances were written in the romance languages.
