Soc 3313f: lecture 7 legal responses to drug. What is it: 5 strategies of the enforcement of prohibition: Source reduction= trying to eliminate drug crops in other countries or our own and ignores social/economic roots for its production. Interdiction= preventing illegal drugs from coming into our country. Disruption of distribution networks=high level of domestic distribution networks (when drugs are already in the country) Targeting wholesalers= middle level dealers in charge of distribution rings (dealt with provincially & municipally) Alcohol falls under foods and drugs act. Advantages: results in fewer people using substances, value of sobriety and control, bringing people together collectively and cohesively. Disadvantages: cost to taxpayers=expensive to continue to pay for these programs. Drug offenses under criminal code show that over 60% of all drug related offensives involve the possession of cannabis: cost of increased crime= criminal users will commit crime to continue their drug habits.
