CH 106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Low-Density Polyethylene, Ethylene, Copolymer

68 views3 pages

Document Summary

Large chain molecules made up of monomers (smaller molecules) We use plastic rather than glass bottles today (safer, require less materials) Glass is heavier and would cost more to transfer. Recycled water bottles do not get reused for food grade plastic. Plastic materials can be made to flow under heat and pressure (plasticity, ability to change shape) Silk (we create synthetic substitute as well) Polyethylene (ethylene-2 carbon w/ double bond+4 hydrogen) Synthesis: ethylene-us 20 billion kilograms, produced from cracking petroleum, a gas, put under heat, pressure, and catalyst to create a very long chain. Condensation polymerization-creates polymer, water, and waste-product/bi- product. Condensation polymerization occurs when small molecules (water, alcohol, ammonia, hcl, are released as byproduct) Addition polymerization occurs when monomers add to one another in such a way that resulting molecule contains all atoms that are present in monomer. If you change the type of monomer you change the type of plastic.
