Selim iii ascended the throne in 1789: kept in sultan"s palace while growing up in isolation, though he was able to communicate with the outside world. Empire was corrupt, with being able to buy certifications to be janissaries. When beys say nothing is wrong in the empire selim knew he needed to revamp the military, starting with the janissaries: dresses them in western uniforms, subjects them to western training. Janissaries revolt and kill everyone in the palace except selim"s little cousin, mahmud ii. They give this 8 year old the throne. Modern middle eastern history begins in 1798 with napoleon. India is england"s most wealthy colony, and you have to go through egypt to get there-- so the. Mamlukes were defeated and napolen takes over. England drives french out of egypt, cutting off their supplies so they go back to france, as there is a power vacuum in egypt.
