Ancient rome: 2 parts, republic - rise of republic- downfall of republic, rome as an empire, italy 1st civilization, etruscans- first civilization in rome. Rome was a port strong in naval. Latin right - early romans didn"t want conflict with neighbors. Council of plebes: represents 98% of society, helped people get individual rights, like rights to run for senate despite being poor, ceo of roman republic - the highest office, laws were unwritten. Twelve tables: first written laws in rome, on 12 pieces of clay, only for citizens, if non roman broke a law they were killed or enslaved. Carthage: founded by phoenicians, northern africa, fought about land and territory, 264- 148 bc, the punic wars. Carthage were trade rivals of the romans. Their army was made up of mercenaries. Mercenaries were people who would fight for anyone for pay. War ends because both sides worked out a peace treaty. Carthage had to pay rome 200 talons for 50 years.
