Feral: animals descended from domesticated animals that have become unsocialized to humans. Born and exist in a wild state, care for themselves: may be one or several generations removed from an animal socialized to humans. Breeding of dogs for profit, fighting, aggression -> many abandoned. Abandoned or lost pets after disasters or financial issues. Los angeles, detroit (financial crisis), new orleans (especially after hurricane katrina), cleveland, new. York city, baltimore, houston, indianapolis, santa fe, st. louis, many native american reservations. Estimated 120,000 street dogs in new orleans after hurricane katrina. 200,000 people were bitten in los angeles city and county by free-roaming dogs. In 1999, swat teams, sheriff, and police swept the streets for dogs. Residents sometimes carried clubs and bats to defend themselves. Truly feral dogs are rarely aggressive to humans. Abandoned fighting or protection dogs are main threat to humans. Heightened fight/flight due to past abuse: may join packs of feral dogs.
