If you give your word you keep it. Publisher is totally responsible for what goes in the newspaper. Separation between the publishers and the newsroom: monitors power. Journalists are a power that needs to be monitored. Glory of the grahams not to meddle. Don"t want opinion of the post to dictate any decision made. Can"t serve their interests by manipulating the editor that"s the way it is in a good paper. Saw him through a neighborhood passing invited in for tea: met later and became friends, was running for president at the time. Was assigned to cover him by the post, got to know him very well. Interested in him more as a journalist as a friend: had to tell bradlee if he wanted to say something off the record. Whole idea of reporters socializing with people at night and then writing about them the next day.
