Document Summary

Ovarian: early follicular phase, late follicular phase, luteal phase. Day 12 = estradiol (positive feedback to produce fsh/lh) Day 13 = spike in fsh/lh (ovulatory surge) 2 locations of gnrh cells in the hypothalamus (nuclei) control pituitary secretion of gonadotropins in the female. A surge center controls the lh near ovulation. Gonadal steroids act on a pulse generator to keep lh/fsh secretion under negative feedback. Progesterone secreted by corpus luteum in large amounts during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. If a young woman has not menstruated by age 16 she is diagnosed as having primary amenorrhea. It may be caused by drastic weight reduction (poverty, anorexia nervosa, strenuous exercise), chronic illness, hypothyroidism, Secondary amenorrhea is the failure of an adult woman to menstruate for six months. It may be brought on by low food intake, heavy exercise, pregnancy, lactation, onset of menopause and tumors of the pituitary and ovary.
