Document Summary

You will work with a partner to measure: resting hr & bp, bp/hr responses to aerobic and resistance exercise. Place cuff on lower leg and practice: listen for korotkoff sounds (see table below). a. In essence systolic blood pressure (sbp) is the first loud sound you will hear: diastolic bp (dbp) will either be the absence of sound or the last sound you heard. Standard protocols require a minimum of 2 seated measures, usually 1-2 min apart (then average the readings if bp is within 5 mm hg). Repeat 1-2 more times if needed and average these multiple readings. Collect resting hr and bp (non-dominant hand) data. The subject will be seated to perform the handgrip exercise using his/her dominant hand. Maximal voluntary contraction (mvc): have the subject squeeze the dynamometer as hard as possible for no more than 2 sec. Allow 20-30 sec of rest in between trials. a: use the highest value and calculate 40% of the mvc.
