Encompasses most immediate and contemporary activities of our lives. It"s what most people are talking about and doing now. Driven by the media - contains primary fund of ideas that informs our daily lives. Sometimes exerting more influence than family, friends, or school work. Popular culture delivers messages we internalize and act on later. How the masses use free time, what most of us engage in most often. Allows large heterogeneous masses of people to identify collectively, serves inclusionary role in society, provides opportunities for communal bonding. Leisure that is marketed and sold as a product. Things once popular are inevitably unpopular later. Largely (but not entirely) determined by interests of young people. Best selling music, movies, food, etc largely determined by youth culture. Young people = powerful force in precipitating change in society. Buying and listening to music = popular activity. Pluralistic - not just 1 form/ type.
