In the us, firearms were used in: 73% percent of the murders in 2016 (up trend, 40. 8% percent of robberies in 2015, 24. 2% percent of aggravated assaults in 2015. *the % is staying steady but the total of gun sales is going up (therefore gun- ownership is concentrated in about 1/3 of households. In illinois: of the 941 homicides for which data were available in 2016: 799 (of 941) were committed with a firearm. Of those 799 homicides committed with firearm, 728 were committed with a handgun. *slight decrease in shootings in illinois this year. *most shootings occur in the summer on weekends. Major federal gun control laws: national firearms act of 1934. Tax & required registration (al capone: mobsters, short barrel shotguns & machine guns) Large taxes discouraged manufacturing & purchase of these weapons without banning them: gun control act of 1968.
