Document Summary
Department of education classically defines bilingual education that it is an instruction in two languages, and the use of those two languages as mediums of instruction for any part, or all, of the school curriculum. According to the public broadcasting service, this is not a new question, but it is the one that has been highly debated since the colonial era. The united states has gone through periods of high and low tolerance of bilingual education programs throughout the history of the nation. The events of the history of this country have been key factors in determining the policies and legislation surrounding bilingual education. Finally, bilingual education act of 1968 was passed during the era of growing immigration and civil rights movement. This act mandated that schools must provide bilingual education programs. There are programs designed to help native and non-native english speakers become bilingual.
