Dear Dr. Vainis Aleksa:
In spring 2014, I interviewed Shannon Keane, one of the in-training tutors at the UIC writing
center, who believes that each student must know the requirements of becoming a writing center
tutor, and every writing center should have tutors from different ethnicities to help students by
giving different feedback on their papers. These tutors can also help non-English speakers in
their native languages.
According to Shannon, every student who wants to be a writing center tutor should know that
they must take English 222 class to become a tutor. In English 222, students learn to develop a
good thesis, create citations, and research on tutoring. After finishing English 222, students will
have two options. They can become either paid tutors or volunteer tutors. To become a paid
tutor, they have to write an essay on the relationship between experiences of learning in English
222 and specific examples of their tutoring practice.

She talked about her skills to catch a mistake while reading a paper or anything for the first time. She mentioned that other tutors may not have the same skill, but they have some other skills to give students feedback on their papers. With different feedback, students can choose the one that they like the most and edit the paper.
