A film review
The short documentary called “How to Make Kimchi according to my Kun-Umma” was
written and directed by Samuel Kiehoon Lee in 2007. This documentary shows a Korean lady,
Bong ja Lee, making Kimchi. She never forgot how to make Kimchi, and she has always made
it by herself even if there is little bit of work to make Kimchi. The process of making Kimchi is
the one of her personal ways of maintaining a culture; she feels it is important for the community
as well; therefore she expanded her maintenance of culture by involving in teaching Korean to
children and participating in Korean festival. In showing this woman who was involved in many
ways to maintain a culture for herself and community, the director, Samuel Kiehoon Lee, has
successfully delivered the message that the new generations need to work hard as immigrants to
maintain some of their culture and values.
The director started the documentary very well. He started with asking people what they
know about Kimchi. No one knew what Kimchi was, and that makes us curious to know what
Kimchi is, how to make it, and how it tastes. Through his film, the director shows us how many
cultural traditions there are that we don’t know anything about. For example, everyone knows it
is a tradition to eat with chopsticks in China. Similar to chopsticks, it is a tradition to eat Kimchi
in Korea. So what we find out is that Kimchi is the traditional food in Korea just like bread in
America, or the use of chopsticks in China, therefore, Kimchi represents the long term culture
tradition of Korea.
