KN 252 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Precentral Gyrus, Postcentral Gyrus, Parietal Lobe
Document Summary
Central nervous system: integrates and controls the entire nervous system; receives input and produces output. Cns composed of the brain and spinal cord; the brain is composed of 4 parts. Between lobes and gyri: commissural fibers, association fibers, projection fibers. 80% total brain mass (less neurons than cerebellum) Comands voluntary motor function of the body. Grey matter: (cortex) external covering of the cerebrum; composed of unmyelinated structures neuronal cell bodies and glial cells. White matter: internal brain nerve fibers (axons); there are 3 types. Between cortex and lower brain areas and spinal cord. The four lobes of the brain: frontal: higher order thought and planning, parietal: integration of many different processes, temporal: processes hearing, occipital: vision. Fissures and sulci: central sulcus: separates frontal and parietal lobes, parieto-occipital sulcus: separates parietal and occipital lobes, lateral sulcus: separates temporal and parietal lobes, longitudinal fissure: separates cerebrum into l/r halves. Forms the central core of the cerebrum; contains four parts.
