Formulation of drugs into dosage forms suited for delivery to the site of action. Drug dosage forms determine how quickly the drug disintegrates or dissolves and is absorbed. A drug is made up of one or more active ingredients and various additives. Examples of active ingredients: alkaloids, glycosides, polypeptides, salts, steroids. Examples of additives: binders, diluents, disintegrators, dyes, flavorings, fillers, lubricants, vehicles. Drugs are formulated and administered to produce either local or systemic effects; may be solid (e. g. , tablets, capsules, patches); semisolid (e. g. , ointments, creams, suppositories); or liquid (e. g. , elixirs, suspensions, syrups) In order for a drug to exert its effect on a particular tissue, it has to get to that site and in sufficient quantity. In therapeutics, the idea is to achieve and maintain a certain concentration of drug within the body. The four processes that need to be considered in achieving and maintaining this goal are.
