James Marcia (on identity)
1) Identity has been called a sense, an attitude, a resolution, and so on. I would like to propose
another way of constructing identity: as a self-structurean internal, self constructed,
dynamic organization of drives, abilities, beliefs, and individual history. The better
developed this structure is, the more aware individuals appear to be of their own
uniqueness and similarity to others.
a) Marcia identifies four identity statuses
Foreclosure: Others impose an identity and life path
Identity diffusion: Directioless, hae’t oteplated life path etesiel
Moratoriu: Cosidered a optios, a’t oit to a oe thig
Identity achievement: committed to a life and/or career path
a) Eperieig stress: Aerias ad Midlife Crisis
Why the contradiction: cultural beliefs (crisis at midlife) vs research (no crisis at
age 40)
Moral Development
a) Thinking about the moral domain
What’s the oral doai
b) Enduring/unchangeable principles of right/wrong especially with regard to
Harming others
Fairness to members of a group
Sanctity (holiness, purity)
Lawrence Kohlberg
1. Stages of moral development (extending Piaget)
How study?
Present moral dilemmas
2. The scientific question is the study of moral development
Is there systematic changes in the way children answer this
question?
Stages of Moral Development:
1. Preconventional (Premoral)
Thinking organized around reward/punishment concepts

i. I stopped pullig the at’s tail eause I did’t at to get

2. Conventional
Adhere to rules/norm of authority figures
Be good in the eyes of others
