ANT 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Depth Perception, Binocular Vision, Color Vision
Document Summary
There are 230 non-extinct species of nonhuman primates. Different groups of species get around the world in different ways. Lack of dietary specialization, reflected in dentition. Visual acuity and reduced sense of smell. Longer period of gestation and dependency of offspring. Social groups and permanent association of adult males. Tactile pads enriched with sensory nerve fibers at the ends of digits. Other species have reduced limbs so that they aren"t as evolved as primates are. Their thumb is an extension of their bone (not moveable) Many monkeys are able to grasp objects with an apposable thumb, while others have very reduced thumbs. Because thumb could get in the way (they move around mostly via trees) Humans are capable of a precision grip. Eat a combo of all kinds of food. Most have four types of teeth incisors, canines, premolars and molars. I : c : p : m (incisors : canines : premolars : molars)
