Used oldowan tool kit but expansion of brain allowed them to create more sophisticated tools. Biface (sheared off part of rock on both sides to make them sharper) H. erectus was first species to seem to make fire. Increasingly placed by researchers into a separate species (homo neanderthalensis) Could they mate ( would determine if they would be a separate species or not) Brain size: larger than h. sapiens today (1520 cm cubed compared to 1300-1400 cm cubes) Cranium: large, long and low and bulging at the sides. Don"t have a chin (only modern humans have them) Has an occipital bun (specific to them) Brow ridge tends to be one large bar.
