The u. s. say enormous growth in population and literacy rates, migration to larger cities, and joining of the workforce in the late 1800"s. The u. s. went from a self-sustaining rurally dominated culture to one in which our citizens worked for wages and began careers . The media have ever since been linked to big business and mass consumption of goods. Magic bullet theory: everyone exposed to a media message would react in the same manner. Critics of media at the point were concerned with motion pictures and theorized that viewers (children) would be impacted by viewing images on the big screen and wouldn"t be able to control their urges to imitate the behaviors. Ex: superhero in a movie smokes a cigarette; kid thinks that smoking a cigarette is a kind of way to become a superhero. Payne study had a positive impact, but some methods and results were controversial.
