As you age, the network of support and the convoy changes. As you get older, the convoy changes in many distressing ways (people start dying, you lose your work support ) Life course changes in types and patterns of support. In terms of instrumental support, you become more independent. As you grow older, you may start needing the instrumental support. Generally speaking of unpaid, informal support (families) Formal support practical and emotional support that people pay for. As people starts to become a little more vulnerable, people will start out by getting informal support. As needs increase the informal support becomes supplemented by formal support and as time goes on the formal support increases and increases to the point where the person ends up completely on formal support.
