Originally, heroin was an alternative to morphine. Heroin was used as a cure for morphine addicts; giving drug addicts a different drug to fight their drug addiction. Growth of heroin was similar to the growth of other drugs. Heroin and cocaine were similar to some people. Men mostly used heroin (mostly white and young) The majority of women who used heroin were prostitutes. Heroin was associated with crime, violence, prostitution, etc. Heroin was stronger than morphine so it was easier for people to overdose and die. Heroin began spreading to other states from new york. The further away from new york, the weaker the heroin was. Heroin became illegal, so people began smuggling it. To maximize the effects of heroin, people began to inject heroin rather than snort it.
