Phonetics: the study of the sounds of human language. This will be very important because a lot of ways in which we will discuss variation in dialects has to do with how people sound. In order to talk about sounds, we need a phonetic alphabet. Phonetic alphabet: a system of transcription which represents each speech sound with a single symbol and each symbol with a single speech sound. This eliminates the ambiguity of the sound symbol variations within a language or across languages. The most widely used phonetics alphabet is the international phonetic alphabet (ipa) Place of articulation: where the airstream is most obstructed. Manner of articulation: the particular way the airstream is obstructed. Simple vowels composed of a single configuration of the vowel tract. Two part vowels consisting of a transition from one to the other in the same syllable. A dialect: the language variety characteristic of a particular regional, ethnic, or social group.
