LIN 317 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Dialectology
Document Summary
The application of sociolinguistic knowledge about the nature of dialect diversity to educational and other social issues. Could be about speech sciences, for example, when a speech therapist has to tell the difference between dialect (difference) and deficit. In talking about school-aged children, we have to remember a few facts: Children come to school (age 5) speaking whatever was spoken at home. Children arrive with a wide range of backgrounds in terms of literacy and orality. School is a new experience for many. Unfortunately many (most) school curricula are designed as one size fits all . Letters of recommendation, transcript, writing sample/essay, and sat/act scores. Many of these items can assess language, in addition to whatever they are designed to assess. Allow schools to compare students in a way that is easier than the more subjective measurements. Language of the test may be extremely different from the home language of the student (includes the language that gives directions)
