PS 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Bourgeoisie, Class Conflict, Actor Model
Document Summary
Liberalism: focuses on cooperation and the role of society, anarchy isn"t necessarily a bloodbath like the realists think. There can be cooperation and agreement that come about because of social norms: states aren"t unitary actors. They provide information to states that alter events: rational actor model is not always true. States aren"t good at maximizing their interests so this model doesn"t really work: states don"t have any specific overarching preference or goal. Some may want power, but others may not. These objectives even change over time within the same state: war is not a good tool. It just isn"t: nations and even humans are not just self-centered. Some are but some rise above it and become altruistic: the role of society is important. The us doesn"t take actions, people in the us take actions. They are organized to promote different interests: leaders of the society promote their interests.
