PSY 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Cardiovascular Disease, Fokker E.Ii, Calorie
PSY 100- October 27th, 2017
5) Incentive Theory
People are motivated to attain desirable stimuli and avoid unwanted stimuli
oExample- buying a lottery ticket
Examples of Specific Motivators
1. Hunger
a. Critical role of physiological needs with regard to motivation
a.i. HUNGER RESPONDS TO A NEED
b. That need is maintaining appropriate nutrients supplies in the body
b.i. However, this is often last reason why we eat
c. Internal Signals:
c.i. Stomach contractions occur when we are hungry
c.ii. Glucose (form of sugar that circulates in the blood and provides major source of
energy for body tissues)
c.ii.1. The level of glucose is noted by your liver which monitors
whether glucose has been deposited or not
c.iii. Signaling your brain
c.iii.1. The signals from your liver go to the hypothalamus
c.iii.1.a. If lateral hypothalamus stimulated-start feeding
c.iii.1.b. If ventromedial hypothalamus stimulated-stop feeding
c.iii.1.c. EXAMPLE- Rat with no ventromedial hypothalamus vs.
one with
d. External Signals:
d.i. Expected Mealtime
d.ii. Sight of food
d.iii. Smell of Food
d.iv. Stress
d.v. Bordem
e. Eating too Much
e.i. Can lead to being overweight

Psy 100- october 27th, 2017: incentive theory. People are motivated to attain desirable stimuli and avoid unwanted stimuli: example- buying a lottery ticket. Examples of specific motivators: hunger, critical role of physiological needs with regard to motivation a. i. Hunger responds to a need: that need is maintaining appropriate nutrients supplies in the body b. i. However, this is often last reason why we eat c. Stomach contractions occur when we are hungry c. ii. Glucose (form of sugar that circulates in the blood and provides major source of energy for body tissues) c. ii. 1. The level of glucose is noted by your liver which monitors whether glucose has been deposited or not c. iii. The signals from your liver go to the hypothalamus c. iii. 1. a. Example- rat with no ventromedial hypothalamus vs. one with: external signals: d. i. Excess amount of body weight that includes muscle, bone, fat, and water e. ii.
