Not all children experience school the same way. Many factors affect how well youth will do and how they will experience the school system: social class, race/ethnicity, gender. Greater emphasis placed on girl and their sexual experiences that boys: girls are often treated differently than boys when it is suspected that they are sexually active. The us department of education measures the nation"s educational progress: assesses school children (9,13, and 17) on their academic achievement in reading and math. Scores for reading and math increased or remained the same for every age group from 1971 to 2012. Gender: girls average higher scores in math at ages 13 & 17, girls average higher reading scores at all ages. Race: white students average higher math and reading scores, but this gap is narrowing. Class: public schools average lower math and reading scores than private or catholic schools.
