Concerning the role and function of jails, organization, populations, admissions, daily operations, classification, and staffing. Design and supervision is also quite important with creating a secure setting inside and out. Lastly further issues involved with jails cannot be overlooked, as they are problems we are currently dealing with, such as crowding, legal issues, the mentally ill, and suicides. Different philosophies have contributed to the growth of prison operations and missions. Within this topic is the issue of increased prison populations, construction of new prisons, development of private prisons, and the changing make-up of the prison population as a whole. The creation and development of the federal prison system is highlighted with current changes and challenges, followed by the comparison of federal and state prisons.
