Can become bodhisattva and get reborn in other lands but don"t have to. Recitation is to say homage to amitabha buddha. Remember amitabha, recollect in practice, born in pure land. Will be at death bed so can meet death without anxiety. Vow #18 = most important of 48 vows because remember name, direct merit, reborn in pure land. Chanting helps you see vision of pure land. When buddha is alive and set amount of years (500-1000) People have enough virtue and merit to follow path to enlightenment. Bare reflection of what practice used to be. Monks, monasteries but not much progress made on path. Monks don"t keep vows, lay people don"t give gifts. Don"t have what it takes to follow path anymore.
