ASTRO 115 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Chemical Energy, Organic Compound, Food Energy
Document Summary
Chapter 5: general properties of life on earth, order: materials in living organisms exhibit some type of order in their internal structure. E. g. molecules in living cells arranged in patterns. Necessary condition for life, because something cannot be alive without order. Order is not a sufficient condition for life, because order alone doesn"t make something alive: dna molecules are building blocks of life, not life itself, reproduction: living organisms reproduce or are products of reproduction. Not all living organisms are capable of reproduction e. g. mule. Viruses smaller than bacteria are incapable of reproducing on their own, until it infects a living organism. Prions, infectious proteins, makes copy by causing other molecules to change instead of replication: growth and development: living organisms grow and develop in patterns directed in part by heredity. Heredity: traits passed to an organism from its parent(s)
