Many animals and plants have 2 sexes, but some also have male and female gametes and gonads in the same individual. In plants, both male and females flowers occur on same individual it is called = monoecious. When male and female flowers on separate individuals, term is dioecious. These animals usually have gonads, called ovotestes, that can produce both eggs and sperm. In animals when an individual can act as a male and female = hermaphrodite. Hermaphrodites can be simultaneous, which means that both kinds of gametes are produced at the same time. Hermaphrodites can be sequential, producing either type of gamete, but not at the same time. Individual will play role of male or female depending on what it"s mate is doing. Sea slug, aplysia, can act as both male and female and reverse role with the same mate. Blue banded goby fish, lythrypnus dalli can act as both male and female, with larger specimens usually acting as females.
