Aeschylus first surviving tragic poet, he wrote the persians (470) honoring. Sophocles 496-406, he was a friend of herodotus, and wrote oedipus and antigone and was a priest of healing: antigone 442, sophocles was elected general for it about children of oedipus. Set in thebes, antigone wants to bury the body of her brother polyneices but her uncle creon has denied it because he thinks he is a traitor. Traitors were not allowed to be buried in athens walls. Cleon buries antigone in a cave where she hangs herself. Euripides 485 wrote medae (woman killing her children) and the bacchae all actors. 3 tragedies and 1 satyr play was performed per day. Dionysus gets revenge on pentheus now the king of thebes who refuses his deity. Drives women mad and towards mount cithaeron: maenads worshippers of dionysus (mad women) Chorus in the play were dionysus followers so they only supported him: entry was initiation only with benefits after death.
