ENVIRON 201 Lecture 25 Food Waste The problem of waste About 40 of all food produced in the US is wasted, more than 160 billion pounds of food a year Facts of food insecurity o Number of people chronically undernourished: ~780 million people in 20142016 (about 1 in 10) o Number of Americans without food security: ~42 million Americans (about 1 in 9 people) o Amount of food we produce: in 2010, US produced about 4,000 calories per person, per day o The average American only needs 2,000 calday o If 25 of food currently wasted could be saved, it would feed 870 million people Food production How much of the US land is devoted to food production? o About 41 of the US is farmland, ~922 million acres How much stuff goes into 1 acre of corn? o ~594,000 gallons of freshwater o ~140 gallons of gasoline o ~200 pounds of fertilizers (NP) Several pounds of pesticides, herbicides, etc. o More than 90,000,000 acres of land just for corn o Now imagine throwing 40 of that in the trash Food waste
