Document Summary
The story type: the story of the play is a worldwide story type you saw in the biblical story of joseph- Potiphar"s (cid:449)ife: hippolytus has a lot of s(cid:455)(cid:373)path(cid:455) for potiphar"s (cid:449)ife. Importance: hippolytus is not produced as often as agamemnon or antigone. The most produced plays of euripides are probably medea and the trojan women, then bacchae. But it is one of the most influential. First hippolytus: probably was closer to the traditional story in which phaedra was evil. When he refused her, she told theseus he had raped her. After theseus learned the truth, she killed herself in the middle of the play: set in troezen, not athens. This is euripides, he makes problems seem obvious. Pitying phaedra: one of the particular goals of the play is to make you sympathize with a truly evil thing, sympathize with does not mean not judging, but the play denies your moral superiority.
