Kikuyu traditions of land ownership did not fall into line with european ideas of private property - most severely impacted by land appropriation did not lose the most land (pastoralists lost the most) Kenya, however, was not a settler colony - settlers had no political control and were never granted self-government. Kenya = crown colony white settlers = 1% of population pg 11: need for new land b/c plantations did not prove to be economically pro table so needed more land to o set that loss. Kikuyu put into reserves, and some will become squatters on white-owned territory resistance to land appropriation took form of squatter peasant resistance in terms of destroying crops, farm machinery, cattle raids and killing, sabotaging production on the plantation. 1895, named kamau wa ngemyi, kikuyu attended presbyterian mission school, baptised w/ baptismal name: johnston kamau.
