One-party state = single truth regime: prolong war 4 independence after wwii. ~5million ppl died: vietnam and southeast asia. Vn, after wwii, differ from rest of sea. In couple ways: british left burma w/o a real fight, dutch left indo with a small fight, home-grown communist gov, nationalism became synonymous w communism. Strong sense of ethnic identity & resistance against foreign occupations which made it easy communists to mobilize the mass to fight against french & u. s. Confucian wasn"t a religion so once gov taken over by french, confucianism no longer makes sense. Collapse of worldview which opened up a giant vacuum in minds of viet literati so they filled it w communism (largely bc both are very similar). Antagonized intelligentsia bc didn"t promise independence, allow free speech, etc. Most colonial power succeeded in winning over 1 part of society.
