Even the most nationalist, had no hope that colonialism would be driven out. Between mid-1942 and mid-1945, entire area was occupied by forces of imperial. At a stroke, jap removed the europeans & americans, destroyed colonial sys. By 1945 (end wwii), in most countries, local nationalists were in position to thwart a colonial combat. In short, wwii was a major watershed in sea history. Wwii made politics more radical, populist, & marxist than b4 war. The jap victory confirmed what sea nationalists had been telling themselves w/o much confidence (that asian could learn secret from colonialists & use it against european themselves). December 1941 to july 1942, all sea fell under army & navy of imperial jap. 6 months, eur & american control was destroyed.
