Document Summary
Small city, but had excellent musical forces. Left rhineland for vienna to move to safety in 1792. Father was a court musician in bonn court who was an alcoholic and abusive parent. This is part of why he went deaf- damage from abuse. Core of patronage network was the imperial court. Discerning viennese patrons saw young beethoven as a new mozart . His spreading personal network included female patrons, piano pupils, and friends, among them two sisters of the brunsvik clan- therese and josephine. In his teens his popularity and composition decreased. As a freelance composer and performer without a fixed position, he needed his patrons" support to advance his career and gain recognition. Prince karl linchnowsky- most generous, gave beethoven an annual pension of 600 florins from 1801-1806. Linchnowsky tried to help mozart through his financial struggles as well and arranged mozart"s tour to prague, dresden, leipzig, and berlin in 1789. 7 yrs later- arranged same tour for beethoven.
