Throughout the readings for this week, the idea of an arab identity was discussed in conjunction with an overview of ottoman rule and colonial rule in the arab world. In your response, think of ways that the arab people responded to these different rulers and how these different rulers viewed and treated the arab people. They wanted to encompass all the citizens under the empire as equals and no one should be marginalized due to their religion or sect. This was to transfer the loyalty of both the. Since sunnis were the majority, the other sects were marginalized like the maronites and greek catholics. These groups were separated from each other also geographically as they took over different mountainous regions in syria. They all had the arabic language in common.
