Document Summary
Mcdb chapter 20: carbohydrate synthesis in plants and bacteria. The calvin cycle: c3 plants: first stage: fixation, production of 3-phosphoglycerate, requires addition of 3 molecules of co2, second stage: reduction, atp used, nadph is used to reduce sugars. Stage 3: regeneration: goals, regenerate ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate via the interconversion of sugars, 3-7 carbon sugars, very similar enzymes/reactants/products to the non-oxidative pentose phosphate pathway, make sugars of various lengths. Wasteful production of plant molecules: lots of nadh is made, not harmful so no regulations to slow down this production; backdoor approach. In the light: photophosphorylation: moving electrons to the etc to make proton gradient to make atp. Summary: c2 plants, 2-phosphoglycolate = no use, converts it to serine and co2, wasteful photorespiration, c3 plants, 3-phosphoglycerate, calvin cycle, net glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate, c4 plants, oxaloacetate used to make 3-phosphoglycerate, avoids wasteful photorespiration, makes nadph. Sucrose synthesis: begins with an udp activated glucose, nice leaving group with high phosphoryl transfer potential.
