Music is composed in time and has history. Music is unique compared to visual arts - music forces you to sit in order to contemplate it in all its fullness. Music requires time to present; compare the set of time of music with the self-directed time of reflection for visual art. May represent or designate time (as in poetry that mentions when it takes place) Film about time travel - about nature of film. Interplay of tonal rhythms with metrical time. Durational properties of tones provide composers with opportunities. Laypeople think of as beat/pulse, but rhythm is different than meter. Rhythm and meter are two different things. A recurring pattern of strong and weak beats.
