Serve universal functions and culturally varying ones. Emotions guide our most important thought patterns. Appraisal - recognition of event as significant. Significant events - advance or impede personal goals. Goal relevance - does event relate to goals. Goal congruence/incongruence - does event advance or impede goals. Ego involvement - how does event affect one"s sense of self. Ex) signalling a shh to say we"re going to speak quietly. Self adaptors - nervous, random, nonverbal actions; self soothing actions. Emblems - actions that directly translate to words. Expression of emotion in man and animals (darwin 1872) Principle of serviceable habits: how certain behaviors lead to rewards. Encoding: when feeling an emotion, we express the motion with similar muscle movements in the face and body. Decoding: we judge expressions in accurate and similar fashion across cultures.
