Document Summary

Psych 111: lecture 2 - 1/12/14 : the research enterprise in psychology. Hypothesis testable, a proposed relationship between two variables. Variables come in different forms and determine analysis. > continuous variable: weight gain or loss is a continuous variable. How have people labeled and defined: research on sexual activity and adolescence. 5 steps: develop a theory based on observations, develop hypothesis from theory to test theory, design a research study, gather data, analyze data and report findings. Issues in research: validity does it measure the construct your measuring, conceptually related, measuring what you"re supposed to measure. Ex: giving someone snickers to evaluate hunger. Not valid because there are other reasons besides not hunger that they wont eat the snickers bar allergy, not liking chocolate, diabetes etc: reliability: getting consistent results when measurements repeated. Data collection techniques: to make sure you get the right measurements: direct observation, ex: kid sitting making necklace direct observations: shy, focused on necklace, wearing coat.
