What is personality, personality is those relatively enduring characteristics of individuals (thoughts, feelings, attitudes, motives, ways of relating to others, etc. ) that account for their consistent patterns of responses to situations, consistency across time and situations, persoanlity psychology. The science of why and how we develop into the people we are. Our particular characteristics and habits, peculiarities and foibles, neuroses, etc. It is closely related to abnormal psychology and clinical psychology. Emotional con ict - wishes/desires (often sexual) vs. guilt about wishes/ desires. Forgetting of the incident - repression: creation of a psychologically-related symptom - something symbolic, meaningful, psychosomatic . Topographical model: con icting feelings in unconscious (bottom, years of therapy lead to conscious examination of feelings (middle, awareness of feelings allows action (top) Libido: drive to gratify basic biological needs: goes for immediate grati cation, operates on the pleasure principle, primary process: ignores consequences and logistics. Id is in the unconscious: sexual, aggressive, and other unacceptable impulses.
